Be part of Idaho history! The Marketing and Communication Officer will assist in unveiling the new Idaho State Museum to the public. Join a highly motivated team in a fast-paced environment dedicated to preserving the past and enriching the future. In addition to the new State Museum, this position will collect and share amazing stories from the Old Idaho Penitentiary, Idaho State Archives, State Historic Preservation Office, and a wide variety of other educational programs and historic sites.

Principal Responsibilities:

Marketing and Public Relations Planning

  • Establish the department's information and public relations goals, priorities, and operational plans 
  • Direct information and public relations planning 
  • Establish, revise, and implement programs, policies and procedures 
  • Develop and propose information budget for management 
  • May operate as liaison and reporter on legislative activity affecting the department 
  • Monitor and evaluate department information and public relations and marketing effort for value and cost-effectiveness 
  • Assess public reaction to management policy and program decisions 
  • Consult with and advise management on media, publication, and public relations matters 
  • May prepare department position statements 
  • Develop, provide, or direct in-service information and public relations training 
  • Hire and oversee the work of consultants, printers, and vendors such as graphic designers and photographers 
  • Coordinate development and use of displays and exhibits; may supervise staff.

Information preparation and dissemination

  • Coordinates department information flow to the public
  • Issue news releases and other publications to generate earned media coverage
  • Initiates and maintains a wide variety of media contacts
  • Coordinates publicity and provides assistance at agency programs
  • Produces or edits and coordinates the use of educational programs
  • May create special events based on agency’s mission
  • Makes public presentations and represents the department at meetings and conferences
  • Produces or edits publications such as handbooks, brochures, or newsletters
  • Arranges for department personnel to make media appearances, writes speeches, columns, and program scripts
  • Operates audiovisual and word processing equipment, produces, edits, and determines use and distribution of audiovisual and slide presentations
  • Leads agency communication and development team in monthly meetings and strategic planning of agency communications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of organization, structure, and ethics of electronic or print news media.
  • Some knowledge of:
    • Audiovisual production, to include video productions, still photography, slide shows or computer-generated graphics related to public information objectives.
    • Using specialized desktop publishing software packages.

Experience:

  • Planning, developing, and implementing major  external communications or marketing projects 
  • Developing and making oral presentations to groups 
  • Interpreting and translating technical or specialized material into information usable by the public
  • Excellent writing and editing skills for both print and online audiences
  • Ability to use market research, data, and consumer segmentation to develop marketing and communication programs the best reach target audiences
  • Ability to use audio visual platforms as a communications tool
  • Producing or editing informational material using electronic word processing 
  • Gathering and preparing general interest news or writing a variety of news releases that were published or broadcast in mass media for the general public
  • Web and digital content management and communications best practices
  • Developing, writing, and producing informational material for mass distribution and specialized audiences
  • Brand marketing expertise
  • Overseeing contractors/vendors or supervising staff in producing publications 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, marketing, public relations, or related field 

  • May occasionally require working odd hours outside normal business hours to accommodate agency needs 

  • Will require ability to pick up and move a minimum of 30 pounds due to carrying promotional materials to and from events
